Na een succesvol debuutseizoen in Ferrari-kleuren in 2021, toen hij zijn teamgenoot Charles Leclerc versloeg, had de Span jaard vorig jaar tochmeer verwacht. Terwijl Leclerc vooral in de eerste helft van het seizoen een zeer sterke concurrent van Verstappen was, was Sainzmeer een nummer twee bij Ferrari en moest hij het uiteindelijk in het eindklassement het opnemen tegen Mercedes' George Russell in het algemeen klassement. Toch bracht het afgelopen jaar hem enkele mooie momenten. Op Silverstone pakte hij zijn eerste overwinning.
