Hij keerde vorig jaar terug in zijn rol als Ferrari-leider nadat hij Sainz in 2021 had verslagen. In de eerste helft van het seizoen streed hij serieus met Verstappen om de titel en vooral in het begin van het seizoen leek het erop dat hij de titel kon pakken. Maar toen kwamen zowel rijdersfouten als strategische fouten van het team, en uiteindelijk verloor Ferrari. De Monegask was dus blij dat hij in ieder geval de vice-kampioenstitel kon pakken, die hij maar net verdedigde van Pérez.
